The Star Wars prequel star, Ewan McGregor, might be giving us one last glimmer of his take on Obi-Wan Kenobi. We know that there’s going to be a “Star Wars story” film for 2020. Could it be based on the outcast Jedi Master?
The last time McGregor was seen on screen the Star Wars universe was 2005’s Revenge of the Sith. However, at this years Orlando Star Wars Celebration a major film is apparently going to be announced. We know about Episodes 8 and 9, as well as the 2018 Han Solo film, but we still have nothing on the 2020 film that is scheduled.
Fans are heavily speculating that this film could be a Star Wars story revolving around Obi-Wan Kenobi. The film would be set between episodes 3 and 4 during his hermit years on the desert planet of Tatooine, watching over a young Luke Skywalker. Unfortunately, the great Alec Guinness who gave us the original Obi-Wan is no longer with us. So, who better to play the role than the already loved Ewan McGregor?15 years will have passed since the release of Revenge of the Sith by 2020, meaning McGregor would be the correct age when reprising this role. It couldn’t be more perfect!
However, the one question I have to ask: who would be the antagonist in this film? There are a few existing candidates that could fit nicely into this role.
I know, Darth Maul was sliced in half and sent down an eternal pit in a generator room on Naboo. At least, that’s how it seemed. Disney decided to milk the character and keep him alive for the Clone Wars animated TV show. This was also dragged out into the Rebels TV show until very recently.
Although these shows are considered canon and have resolved themselves, it’s still possible that Maul could be put into an Obi-Wan film somehow in order of getting his revenge. Honestly, I prefer to just believe he’s been sliced and gone forever since there’s no realistic way somebody could survive that. But we’ll see.
Boba Fett is undoubtedly the most badass character with almost no screen time in a film franchise, ever. For this reason alone, he deserves to have a huge part in this film so we can truly see how great he is. There are multiple reasons he’d have it in for Obi-Wan.
The Empire could set a hit on all surviving Jedi, the perfect job for a Bounty Hunter. Alternatively, it could be more personal, especially since Boba watched his “father”, Jango, lose his head to a Jedi.
The most obvious choice, and I think we would all be expecting an appearance from Vader regardless. It’s possible that Obi-Wan and Vader cross paths prior to their final duel on the Death Star, and it could have been a lot more epic to watch.
While Obi-Wan still has a bit of age on his side, he still stands a good chance against the most feared Sithlord in the galaxy. I don’t think Vader would fall for that whole high ground trick again though.
A whole new bad guy?!
Why recycle old characters when you make awesome new ones? The possibilities are numerous – A turned rogue Jedi, a new bounty hunter, tusken raiders endangering young Luke – anything.
Ewan McGregor isn’t the only actor that can reprise their iconic role at this point. Liam Neeson could also reprise his role as Qui-Gon Jinn in a force ghost form. Something I’m sure we’re all fairly eager to see on the big screen. We’ll just have to wait and see how it all unfolds.
