It’s been three days since the release of the Nintendo Switch at the time of writing this. In that small space of time it has managed to break the record for fastest selling console that they’ve ever produced. Something I honestly didn’t think would happen!
In just the first two days upon its release, the Nintendo Switch became Nintendo’s fastest selling console to date. It performed especially well in North America, topping the Wii, which has sold more than 100 million units in its lifetime. However, no specific numbers have been officially released (yet) which makes it difficult to make any accurate comparisons. The information was reported by New York Times’ Nick Wingfield on Twitter.
This achievement is made especially impressive when you think about the time of year the Switch was released. March is quite far from any national gift-giving holidays, meaning that performance wasn’t expected to be so high. The Wii was released in prime-time Christmas shopping season back in November 2006, making it a popular gift that year. The Switch hasn’t had this kind of timing but it still managed to pull through, meaning there are many loyal Nintendo fans out there.
The next stage for the Nintendo Switch will be continuing this momentum. The Wii continued its success after launch and is what made it successful – the post-release demand was still fairly high. Whether the Switch can pull this off though, we’ll have to wait and see!
