Who will play the next James Bond?
Yesterday, it was announced that Daniel Craig will return once more to play everyone’s favorite secret service agent, James Bond. The 26th James Bond movie, shows Craig continuing a legacy of incredible James Bond actors and although we’re excited for another 007 movie, we’re all left asking the same question – “Who will play the next James Bond?“.
The next James Bond movie, set for release in 2019 is still unnamed and no details have yet been leaked on potential bond girls or other actors to feature in the 26th instalment of the James Bond franchise. However, it has been said that, this is to be Daniel Craig’s final take on the iconic film character.
Thinking ahead, we can’t help but question ‘who will be filling Daniel Craig‘s shoes after 2019? Who is the next Bond? Will the next Bond be a Hollywood star? Will the 26th James Bond be an unknown actor? And with the recent news regarding Dr. Who, we’re even asking – will the next James Bond be a woman? In the movies, anything goes…
We’ve had a long discussion in the Man Wants office and we’ve managed to pull together a list of potential candidates to play the future James Bond. Here’s some actors we think stand a good chance of donning the ‘007’ title and becoming the next Bond, James Bond.
Gaining fame for roles such as Loki in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, Jonathon Pine in the massively successful The Night Manager, and more recently as Captain James Conrad in Kong: Skull Island – on paper, Tom Hiddleston would be an ideal choice to play the next James Bond.
He’s got impeccable style, heaps of talent and charm (recall the whole Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston dating thing?), not to mention that air of British class required to pull off a great James Bond portrayal. However, we fear that his already, A-list celebrity status may pitch him as ‘too well-known’ and occupied, to make time to be the next James Bond.
Currently, Tom Hiddleston appears to be sticking out his performance as Loki all the way through until next year as Marvel’s Phase 3 comes to a final close. It’s still possible though. If he wants the role and is offered it, I’m sure he’ll make time for it! Who knows – With a charming tweet, Taylor Swift might even be the next Bond Girl?
Another phenomenal, British actor. Tom Hardy films include the likes of Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Mad Max, Dunkirk, The Revenant and even a small cameo in the new Star Wars movie, The Last Jedi. It doesn’t stop there either, Tom Hardy will be adding to his impressive CV when he takes on role of Spider-Man antagonist, Venom in Ruben Fleischer’s 2018 Spider-Man spin-off.
Tom Hardy has previously fueled the rumours of taking up the 007 moniker when he refused to comment on whether he’d be replacing Daniel Craig as James Bond. Apparently, Hardy didn’t want to jinx his chances of becoming the next ‘007’.
Not only is he a brilliant actor, but he’s not far off a real-life action hero himself. Back in April, Hardy chased a motorcycle thief through the streets of Richmond. He managed to catch the guy too and made a citizen’s arrest – proudly topping it off with the words “I’ve caught the c***!” I mean, we think he may not be as suave as Sean Connery’s James Bond but he’ll definitely be entertaining…
Talks of Idris Elba becoming the next James Bond has caused a lot of debate. The respected Londoner has already established a great acting career with performances in Luther, The Jungle Book, Mandela and Bastille Day.
Now let’s just address the elephant in the room. The possibility of Elba taking on the role of Bond caused a bit of controversy, since he doesn’t match the white history that the films have so-far assigned to the character of Bond. Plus – Elba has said himself also that he feels he is “too old” for the role.
Regardless of all of this, the question remains – Will there be a black James Bond? Producer Barbara Broccoli has spoken out about how she aims to increase diversity in the British film industry, so a black James Bond is most definitely not out of the picture. We think Elba would still be a fantastic choice, if he did decide to take the role and with his experiences in the music industry – he could even contribute to a fresh James Bond theme…
Not as well-known as our previous candidates for actors to reprise the role of James Bond but up and coming actor, James Norton is well known for his impressive accolades of TV appearances. You’ll most likely recognise him from Happy Valley, Grantchester, War & Peace and Black Mirror.
Still in his early 30’s, Norton has a promising acting career ahead of him and we feel the possibility of him taking up the Bond title would make him an instant star! Do you pitch James Norton to be the next James Bond? It’s certainly a possibility…
Fassbender will likely be no stranger to film lovers. Famous for his roles in the likes of Prometheus and more recently Assassin’s Creed, there’s a good chance he could be asked to take on the 007 role and contribute his acting skills to the next generation of James Bond movies.
Currently, it might not be worth getting your hopes up, as Fassbender has recently revealed in an interview with GQ that he thinks “Daniel has done such a cracking job in this age group” but the “franchise needs something new”. We’re not quite sure what his definition of “new” might be, but there’s still time for him to change his mind.
A personal favourite for me and any other fans of DC Comics. Cavill rose to stardom with his lead role as Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel. He then reprised his role again in the DC universe’s follow up, Batman v Superman.
So far, Cavill has been quite dedicated to the DC cinematic universe, but his acting skills shouldn’t be reserved for just the fantasy film world – particularly after the concluding events of the BvS snooze-fest.
As a young British actor, Henry Cavill has expressed interest in taking on the role himself, confessing he’d “love” to hang up the blue “S” stamped lycra and red cape for the chic suits, gadgets and fast cars of the James Bond Movies. Will Henry Cavill be the next James Bond? Only time will tell…
Aidan Turner started off on the stage, but then found fame after his appearance as the dwarf Kili for The Hobbit trilogy. Most will also know him as Ross Poldark from the BBC drama Poldark. As an actor, Aidan has great things ahead of him and we can definitely see him taking on the role of James Bond, following Daniel Craig’s retirement. He’s handsome, sophisticated and talented with ‘that edge’ which has really worked for the more successful James Bond actors. The only thing limiting him is his dedication to Poldark.
While Poldark has been renewed for a fourth season, we’re sure Aidan Turner could still continue his work on the BBC drama whilst fighting crime on a more international level as 007.
Theatrically trained, Hollywood actor Luke Evans has cropped up in a ton of high-grossing features. Evans rose to prominence in his performance as Bard the Bowman, who famously took down Smaug the Dragon for the onscreen adaption of Tolkien’s masterpiece – The Hobbit. Luke Evans has also featured in The Three Musketeers, Dracula Untold and more recently, as the vain and cowardly, anti-hero ‘Gaston’ in Beauty and the Beast.
Despite his small-town roots (he was born in Pontypool, Wales) his contemporary look is straight-up City chic – ideal for a modern James Bond. His acting skills have proved to be fairly diverse and I’d honestly love to see him follow in Craig‘s footsteps as a James Bond in the future.
Charlie Hunnam has had plenty of iconic roles, which have demonstrated the diversity of his character. From Channel 4’s ‘Queer as Folk’ to the American hit ‘Sons of Anarchy’, his latest feature shows him take on the historical role of King Arthur in Guy Richie’s ‘King Arthur: Legend of the Sword’. After putting on a bit of muscle and growing some ‘rough around the edges’ facial hair, he appears to be rocking that coveted ‘Tom Hardy‘ look, which is what made me consider him for this list.
If Tom can’t get the role, maybe Charlie could be the next best thing? Despite his massive role for Sons of Anarchy, he’s a fairly new actor in terms of films. Maybe a responsibility as the new 007 will be his time to shine and express the true British class that he’s been waiting to unleash?
Finally, I give you Jamie Bell. You’ll know this chap from his role in Billy Elliott way back in 2000. At the young age of 11, Bell won a BAFTA for Best Actor in a Leading role for the part. Since then, he’s made appearance in the 2005 version of King Kong, Jumper and the most recent Fantastic Four movie. If Bell were up for it, he could probably do a fantastic job as James Bond the secret service agent. He’s young, British and has clearly demonstrated an experience of fast-paced action movies with daring stunts.
And there you have it – 10 great actors with the potential to deliver a great performance as a future James Bond in the next James Bond movies!
So, whilst our big question ‘Who will play the next James Bond?’ isn’t necessarily answered, we have some educated guesses on who we think and who we’d like to reprise the role of 007 for next generation of James Bond movies. As the list of iconic James Bond actors continues to grow with the franchise approaching it’s 26th film at the box office – we’re sure that whoever is cast will deliver something new to the role…
