Mens Seasonal Style Updates – Dressing for Winter

20th November 2019

There’s no denying that we’re officially in Winter (or just running up to it, depends when you’re reading!). The temperatures here in the UK have dropped and that extra time that we should be spending in bed, is now wasted on the early morning car de-icing session. We’re battling hail, snow, rain, long nights and dark mornings but not all is lost…. With every turn of the season, we’re faced with the perfect opportunity to reflect on our style and take a rain check on those staple pieces that keep us looking and feeling like everything is in-check.

Autumn/Winter 2017 has charted some bold menswear trends with heavy textures, vibrant colour ways and a new range of serious silhouettes, which reminds us why getting wrapped up isn’t such a bad thing after all.

We figured that it was about time we spoke with some true professionals and got some valuable advice on how to approach winter menswear dressing without falling victims to fast fashion fads – we knew just the place to get this guidance! Robert Old are the ultimate British Menswear veterans. They have been a luxury designer clothing brand, supplying gentlemen with the finest menswear since 1909. Robert Old are purveyors for some of the World’s most affluent designer brands including Crockett & Jones, Santoni, Ermenegildo Zegna, Eton and their own Robert Old 1909 garments.

We asked the team over at Robert Old to give us some insight on the top menswear items we should be investing in for Winter and they were more than obliged to help! Keep reading for a quick guide to your seasonal style updates for AW 2017.

The Essential Coat

Every man should invest in a nice coat to take you through the colder months. The essential coat will flatter every kind of gentleman and can deliver a touch of sophistication from day to night. Robert Old recommended opting for a ¾ length tailor number to battle of the elements. Their Navy 100% Cashmere Overcoat, complete with suede trims and soft contrasting, wool lining is the ultimate for luxury layering.

A Staple Scarf

A scarf is the perfect finishing touch for every ensemble as we work out way through winter. Scarves act as the perfect layering pieces and can be styled to deliver a little subtle colour as we start to get more (dare I say it) festive. The stylish team at Robert Old recommended their selection of high quality cashmere scarves, woven in the Scottish countryside for an indulgent finish. We’ve opted for the Robert Old Reversible Navy & Bordeaux Cashmere Scarf – a timeless failsafe to see us through until Spring.

The Classic Knit

Winter is the perfect time to experiment with layering. Clashing textures and indulgent fabrics create that coveted aesthetic that’s both polished and practical. Nothing quite lays the foundations for your winter layering more than a Classic Knit. The Classic Knit or Men’s Sweater is the ideal investment piece and these sweaters from Robert Old are incredible – made from the finest 100% Inner Mongolian Cashmere and produced in the small town of Hawick in Scotland, they make the perfect partner for colder climates and your staple seasonal wear.

The Leather Jacket

For off the clock attire a classic leather jacket is a luxury companion, designed to elevate your style to the next level. Menswear collections offer an extensive range of classically inspired leather jacket styles which include the biker leather jacket, field jacket or aviator jacket. We’re drawn to Robert Old’s contemporary take on the Bomber Jacket fashioned in 100% refined calf leather.

The Versatile Shirt

I always think that the most hard-working item in every men’s wardrobe is a great fitting, cotton shirt. A quality shirt is the ultimate piece for easy chic and can be dressed up or down according to the occasion. In Winter Cotton and Cashmere Shirts should be teamed with a classic knit or essential coat for timeless appeal. Robert Old offer a range of both cotton & cashmere shirts, that have been beautifully crafted in the heart England exclusively for Robert Old; using an elegant single needle stitch construction method. All of their house brand shirts have been cut in a classic fit for comfort and are renowned for durability and comfort – they even have some Cotton shirts in striking woven designs, like this Black Paisley Pattern Men’s Shirt – perfect for Christmas.

How would a true gent approach Winter without a good pair of socks? Socks are becoming, more than ever, a true style statement for many men. Pioneered as a classic fashion staple by the likes of Elvis Presley – the undisputed underdogs of men’s style, spark triumph at Robert Old. The ideal gift of indulgence, these socks are crafted in Italy and knitted with a sophisticated rib. Finished with a hank-linked toe seam for optimum comfort.

Belt & Braces

Don’t overlook accessories! The Gents over at Robert Old told us that belts and braces should not just be considered for practical use but should be regarded as the essential details to deliver that finishing touch to your attire. As we enter Winter, you may want to invest in stepping out of your comfort zone and infusing a little character into your outfit with some thoughtful accessories. We like the Navy, Red and White Stripe Silk Braces and the Blue Calf Leather Brass Buckle Belt.

With huge thanks to the team at Robert Old, we now have a simple seven-step guide to updating our wardrobes with seasonal menswear staples which make the perfect partner for these colder months.
